2: NEWSLETTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
------------------------------------------------------------
The newsletter for SelfPublishedAuthors.com is here to provide a
resource for all authors. Obviously, we want to help you
succeed in your writing, self-publishing efforts, and self-
promotion. I have received a few requests from fellow authors
asking what they can do to promote their books in the
newsletter.
I am always happy to help promote an author and their works in
the newsletter. That's what we're here for. That being said,
the best I can do is one of the following.
If you are interested in writing an article about your
experiences as a self-published author, I would be more than
happy to consider it for publication. If I publish the article,
I will give you space for a signature box that you could use to
promote yourself and your book.
If you would like to send me an ARC copy of your book, eBook
format preferred, I would be happy to review it and interview
you. The interview would most likely be what gets published in
the newsletter, but reviews of recommended books may also be
published. Please note, I have already been presented with some
works to read, so please query me first before sending your
books. I'd rather return a book than form a slush pile.
If you have a book signing coming up, we do try to list those
when they are timely. Remember our newsletter is published in
December, February, April, June, August, and October. If you
host a class or workshop, or have a website that promotes a
writer's resource, please let us know about it. All links about
such events are provided free of charge. Your name, location,
dates, and contact info. will be presented.
If instead you are just interested in placing an advertisement
in the newsletter for your book or website, you can read about
the rates on the website at
http://www.selfpublishedauthors.com/advertise.html -- they are
very fair (only $6 per newsletter issue for a five line ad.)
Advertising requests sent to me, however, will be forwarded on
to Christina Wheeler (contact@selfpublishedauthors.com), the
website and newsletter owner.

3: FEATURE ARTICLE by Judy Cullins
Why Self-Published eBooks are Winners
------------------------------------------------------------
Myths abound about print books being the right kind of book and
eBooks are on their last leg. These ideas spring from
traditional publishing.
Hopeful authors have read it many times--that a true book, one
that will bring you reverent kudos, must be in print and must be
long. And it must have a top agent and publisher. Maybe true
five-ten years ago. Like you, I believed it at first and went
down that rocky road to get an agent, then publisher. Way too
hard and took way too long.
My first rule. Write a short book first. Notice famous authors
such as Ken Blanchard did. Second rule. Write a non-fiction,
self-help book first, then a novel if you like. You'll
experience more success with a non-fiction. Then, you can use
the profits to stay the long haul for your fiction.
Follow my lead. First, I wrote print booklets or journals and
sold them at the back of the room in seminars of the same name.
This led to thousands of income each month. Then I read self-
publishing books such as Dan Poynter's. Right track. But, then I
realized one can write a print and an eBook at the same time.
And, you can sell either from your own Web site. Or, you can
take a 50% or less royalty and sell from someone else's site.
Remember one great benefit of eBooks. The author gets by with
little cost. You can send the books via email if you don't have
a Web site yet, and you can offer them as downloads at your
site.
One great benefit of short eBooks. Your audience loves them.
They don't want to spend a lot of time reading. They want quick
solutions in an easy to read format. They don't want long books
over 130 pages with too much extraneous information. Give them
answers to their questions and you'll have a fan for life.
The sad truth that no emerging authors wants to believe--that
they can get the publisher to publicize, promote and market
their book. Not true. It's amazing how many bookcoaching
clients really want to turn it all over to someone else.
The problem is it's way too expensive, and no one knows, nor has
more passion for a book than the author. It's not money that
rules, but a creative approach to sharing your wealth.
Another rule. If you can write a book, you can also write ad
copy for the book's introduction, the short "tell and sell," the
back cover, or the Web or email sales letter. You just need some
coaching from a pro. Start a promotion savings account and spend
a little to get the best words that will attract and give your
audience enough information to make it easy to buy.
Join a telegroup that writes each week and exchanges files with
each other. Of course make sure the bookcoach is savvy and
knows how a saleable book is put together, knows short cuts to
write fast, and clear, and gives you useful feedback to help
your book grow and get born.
What's your intention? To think it takes too much time, too much
money and you aren't much of a writer? If you can get by your
resistances, you can learn how to write -- well. If you put a
little daily attention on your book project, you can finish it.
Take some small action today and feel powerful, because authors
are a special breed-and the club is awaiting your good news.

5: MARKETING ARTICLE by Francine Silverman
Targeting Your Audience
------------------------------------------------------------
It's easy to target your audience if you write a parenting or
hiking book. But what if your book is a memoir, biography or
novel?
There are many ways to find your readers. One method is to pick
apart your book. Is there a theme running through it?
Though Michael Charles Messineo's book, RIGBY'S ROADS
(PublishAmerica 2004), has multiple themes, there is one common
thread -- motorcycles.
Seeking to produce business cards with "maximum exposure to a
captured audience," Michael knew that winter weather in the
Rocky Mountains in Colorado is variable and that cyclists would
benefit from knowing the wind chill/weather/speed ratios.
Calculating the wind chill factor as a combination of
temperature and wind speed, he conceived the idea of creating a
wind chill factor for riding motorcycles in the winter.
"I found the NOAA weather site and used their calculator to find
the wind chill for temperatures ranging from 50 to 10 degrees
and tied that into wind speeds that a motorcycle would be
traveling such as 30, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 mph.
"I created an easy-to-read chart that I could fit on one side of
a business card and I put the plug for my book on the other
side."
Mike mailed them to 150 Harley-Davidson dealers around the U.S.
and handed them out at motorcycle rallies. "So I created a plug
for my book that was secondary to the main focus. The reaction
was fantastic and the card stays with them and is never thrown
out."
"The plug for my book on the reverse side of the wind chill
chart is..... 'Rigby's Roads, A story of love, murder, and
restoration of life. What happens when a mild mannered man who
is about to end his life, gets mixed up with motorcycle gangs,
the FBI, and a chase for terrorist secrets?'
"I always hand the card to the bikers with the wind chill side
in view. They stare at it and read it with interest. I have
perfected my advertising touch because the dollars are being
funneled to my captured audience and I am getting the biggest
bang for my buck."
http://www.authorsden.com/rigby
When a book has multiple themes, you can
(1) Market them separately
Lori Hein's RIBBONS OF HIGHWAY: A Mother-Child Journey Across
America (Booklocker.com 2004) is a travel narrative about a
12,000 mile, post-9/11 journeyed into America that she took with
her two children. Because the book has broad appeal, Lori has
found marketing success in many niches. "Some weeks, I focus on
the travel market," she says.
"Then, I'll switch gears and target my efforts toward parenting
publications, or women's or mother's groups. Terrorism,
patriotism and world events also make my message pertinent to
veteran's groups, the military, and people concerned with
America's place in our world. All of this combines to allow me
very fertile ground for marketing my book. I focus on one niche
at a time."
http://www.lorihein.com
Sigrid Macdonald's second book is a novel dealing with midlife
themes. D'AMOUR ROAD (Lulu 2005) is about a missing woman so she
contacted several other sites of a similar nature and five or
six agreed to link back to her site.
The book also emphasizes the importance of the presumption of
innocence so Sigrid wrote to a number of organizations and
friends that she has "in the world of wrongful convictions.
One sent out my book announcement on a national mailing list and
another group will be reviewing the book in an upcoming
newsletter."
http://www.damourroad.blogspot.com
(2) Promote one theme to several markets
Lorraine Kember's book, LEAN ON ME: Cancer Through a Carer's
Eyes (L. Kember Publications 2004), is about her late husband's
battle with cancer. Her initial marketing effort was to send the
book to members of the medical and palliative care staff who
were involved with his illness.
On every occasion, she says, "my book was highly praised,"so she
moved on from marketing to medical staff to others, which has
increased interest in her book.
http://www.cancerthroughacarerseyes.jkwh.com
(3) Or cross-promote one theme
Paul Steward's first book, TALES OF DIRT, DANGER AND DARKNESS
(Greyhound Press 1998), is a collection of short horror stories
set in caves. Naturally, he targeted cavers, of which there are
more than 12,000 in the USA, according to Paul.
His next book, TRUE TALES OF TERROR IN THE CAVES OF THE WORLD
(Cave Books, 2005) is the Editor's Pick: Book of the Month in
the latest issue of The Hollow Earth Insider's "Unraveling the
Secrets" (http://www.thehollowearthinsider.com).
Paul notes this e-newsletter has over 6,500 subscribers and is
a perfect example of how successful it can be for finding
crossover subjects for your book. As suspected, people
interested in 'hollow earth' theories [those who believe the
earth is hollow and that aliens and UFOs are coming from inside
the earth, not outer space] would most likely be interested in
books about caves.
View your book as a road with many forks and follow them all.

7: PUBLICITY ARTICLE by Dan Shaurette
What Do You Mean You Don't Have A Blog?
------------------------------------------------------------
Last year, in this very newsletter, we featured an article by
Judy Cullins entitled "Should Authors Have A Blog?" I'm looking
around the internet a year later and my resounding answer is
not only "Yes" but also I have to ask a few authors, "What do
you mean you don't have a blog?"
I mean, surely, you have a website. You understand that in
today's world, everyone has a website, and an author without one
should just go bury their books in their backyard.
O.K., so, all sarcasm aside, I know that making a website isn't
easy. A large section of the internet exists however to make
this easier. Some are free, many are cheap, and some are
downright expensive. Even in this arena the adage of you get
what you pay for is valid, but finding the best balance of
features for your money is important.
A subsection of the publicity juggernaut that is the internet
is made up of those sites that let you create a blog. Short for
"web log", a blog is a dynamic website that exists for you to
post your thoughts, news, ideas, answer feedback, etc. You can
write anything from a simple random thought to a diatribe, list
your upcoming book signings, or share your latest article.
In many ways, the simplest and most effective website an author
could have is a blog.
A blog is generally organized in reverse chronological order,
with your newest posts at the top of the webpage. You can
usually have other pages that do not change, thus being static.
These can be dedicated to your book, with links to places where
readers can buy your book. Such a static page could be your main
homepage with the blog as a side feature.
More than just a place for you to share your writing with the
world -- which for any author makes a great way for people to
become familiar with you -- readers of your blog can respond
with comments to your posts. This makes a blog a combination
of something between a forum and a guestbook. You as the author
write, but readers can still interact with you.
There are a number of website host providers who provide space
for a website than can include a blog. Others just host a blog
but one that is flexible enough to be your entire website.
If you have your own server and want complete control over
layout, there are many free or commercial programs that you
(or your server administrator) can install for you.
Almost all blogs can be created in minutes and customized within
an hour to present to the world. (For some though, customization
never really ends.) If you have a website already, some will
integrate well, others may just have to be linked, but can still
look like part of the whole. But for those few of you out there
considering a new website, or don't have one at all, take a
serious look at creating a blog.
Even more important however, and I cannot stress this enough,
is to find a blog provider that will generate RSS or Atom feeds.
RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication, and is a type of file
that is made up of excerpts from your blog with links to the
full entries. An Atom feed is just a different standard than
RSS, but most blogs support both.
Readers of your blog can visit your website and then subscribe
to your RSS feed. They would need a newsreader (like
Newsgator.com, Google Reader, My Yahoo, and more) in which they
will receive your updates. This is quickly taking over a
publishing niche that email mailing lists once held.
It means people no longer have to visit your website directly
to know what's going on with you. Some of you may think this is
a bad thing, but think about this. If people want to know what's
new with you, they are not likely to hit your website on a
regular basis unless they can expect new things to read.
With an RSS feed from your blog, they'll be automatically
updated whenever you write anything there -- and if that news
piques their interest, they'll be hitting your blog to read the
whole message... and other messages... and clicking links, etc.
It drives people back to your website after the initial visit.
News websites have really capitalized on this new syndication
medium. For example, people don't have to visit CNN.com every day
for their news fix. Headlines are sent to them. Now imagine your
website being part of that new medium.
Are there websites that don't fit this model? Sure. Websites
that never change and only give details about your book.
One step above that, are ezines like this one that just don't
come out on a regular enough basis. But an ezine that has weekly
or even more frequently updated content should definitely
consider a blog over a mailing list.
In the publishing world, now more than ever, activity means
success because that will keep your readers interested. It also
catches the interest of search engines. RSS feeds are constantly
slurped up by search engines and that means more hits.
Finally, if you don't have a blog with an RSS feed, you won't be
able to have a podcast. Should you have a podcast? Well, that'll
be my topic next time.
So enough evangelizing, right? What's the best blog for you?
Well, there are quite a few to choose from. I personally have
tested a large spectrum of them, but my votes go to a handful
of options.
YAHOO 360 - Free social network with blog (3 out of 5 stars)
- Free but you need a Yahoo account (also free).
- Probably the best profile/social networking page on the net,
and is part of the Yahoo.com.
- As it truly is a Profile page, its strength is that you give
many details about yourself. This makes it weak for giving
details about your book. (Though you can devote your "About
Me" section to this.
- The blog is quite simple but does the job. This is one of
those sites where the blog is part of the overall profile you
create.
- This is only a recommendation of you want more than a blog and
want something that is part of a social website. I don't
recommend a service like MySpace for such plans.
- This makes it a weak choice for a professional site. But if
you want to connect on a more personal level with readers,
this has its merits.
http://360.yahoo.com
BLOGGER - Free remotely hosted blog (4 out of 5 stars)
- Very fast setup, easily customizable by templates and CSS,
and it offers most of the desired features.
- If you want a blog that looks almost any way you want, is easy
but powerful, and free, this is the one.
- Plus the fact that it is owned by Google means it is that much
closer to the blog search feature of Google.
- The only feature that is really missing is static pages, which
means a Blogger page makes a good fit into other websites,
rather than hosting everything on one server.
http://www.blogger.com
WORDPRESS - Download to your own server (5 out of 5 stars)
- Free software which you can download and install yourself on
your own web server or hosting provider.
- Your server must have PHP version 4.1+ and
MySQL version 3.23.23+.
- Offers everything Blogger does plus it has the ability to
have static pages.
- There are many extension plug-ins available for further
tweaking your page.
- This is the best choice if you have your own server and want
complete control over your blog.
- If you don't have your own server, you can start one on theirs
at http://wordpress.com. Not all features are there, but for
the most part this is an amazing solution.
http://www.wordpress.org
SQUARESPACE.COM -- Pay service hosted blog (5 out of 5 stars)
- This is the only pay service I recommend because of the sheer
number of features they provide at even the least expensive
tier. Going up the rungs they boost the limits and add only a
few extras. Most everything is available from the start.
- Personal tiers: $7, $12, or $17 per month.
- Business tiers: $20, $25, or $30 per month.
- They do offer a free 30 day trial that does NOT require a
credit card to sign up for.
- You can try all of the options from all levels so you can find
the right plan that will fit your needs.
- They offer much more than just blogs. Not only can you have
static pages you can even have forums and guestbooks.
- Finally, my biggest praise: it is modular. Truly as simple as
dragging the feature you want onto your page.
- Ultimately, if you are paying for a website right now, take
a look at SquareSpace.com and see if you can do the same thing
there. I bet you can and probably for a smaller monthly fee.

9: COMMENTARY ARTICLE by Gerri D Smith
What Is True Prosperity?
------------------------------------------------------------
When you live your life by the law of Prosperity, you can create
all that you need. True prosperity starts within the mind and
means more then just money. Ideas, dreams, wishes, thoughts, are
all a part of your prosperity consciousness. So, whenever you
focus your attention on a specific idea, wish or whatever,
whether its positive or negative, it will become real.
Once you know that the power of the mind can attract whatever
you focus on, amazing results can happen. If there is enough
faith behind your request, there is enough power within you to
make it happen. Know, too, that your natural association with a
Higher Power is the true source of your prosperity. Having a
spiritual belief is an important part of this source.
Prosperity is made up of many things and may include some of the
following sources:
1. Good health and healthy living (and eating!)
2. Great relationships with family, spouse, friends, neighbors,
co-workers, associates
3. A fulfilling career
4. Continued mental and emotional growth
5. Satisfactory and worthy material possessions
During times when you feel happy and all is right in your world,
you can actually create your own destiny. From those positive
feelings, focus your thoughts on a definite purpose. From that
you will experience true prosperity. Everyday make your purpose
the central point in your thoughts. Keep thinking about your
vision. This creates your attitude. Then your attitude will
determine how much success and prosperity you'll have in your
life.
The way you look at the challenges you face everyday, and the
way you react to them forms the way things are attracted to you.
If you start your day in a negative mood, you can bet that
negative things will happen to you. The opposite is also true.
When you're in a good mood, you attract positive experiences.
This too, holds true for money. When you give, you get back
much more. Though, at times you can see that the giving is
unbalanced because you're trading one value for another. Think
about the moments when you gave away something of value to you.
Was it given in a begrudging or angry manner, or with an
expectancy of getting something in return? When that happens,
you pay a price. Instead, be conscious of your attitude and the
way you give or the way you handle your money. Spend it and give
it responsibly. Do it cheerfully. Become the kind of person who
gives with kindness and prosperity will find you.
The path to true prosperity includes three steps:
1. Good Health
2. Happiness
3. Wealth
All three steps must exist before you can reach true prosperity.
Before you can tap into the source that creates your prosperity,
it may be necessary to experience the kind of challenges that
shapes your character. Learn from your own mistakes and those of
others. Be ready to become the kind of person it takes to be
trusted and blessed with true prosperity.
You can always attract prosperity by thinking, speaking, and
feeling in a certain way. Have you ever noticed how your money
gets taken from you involuntarily when you don't give it with a
cheerful, loving attitude? It may not happen immediately, yet
inevitably, unexpected expenses like your car breaking down,
your child needing new dental work, or some household item
having to be replaced, will come when you least expect them to,
and when you can least afford them. So, as you give, let go of
any guilt, self-pity, or ill-wishes toward others.
Remember: Prosperity wont happen if you hold on to resentment
or revenge. Replace any negative feelings you may be holding and
open your mind to receive outcomes that are extraordinary. With
this attitude you can challenge the universe and create more
outcomes that are good. And as your wisdom and character grows,
so will your prosperity.
